Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP) is a prominent American multinational corporation and a comprehensive global provider of cloud-based human capital management (HCM) solutions and business process outsourcing (BPO) services. Headquartered in Roseland, New Jersey, the company has evolved over more than seven decades into an industry leader, helping organizations of all sizes streamline their workforce operations, manage compliance, and optimize human resources functionality from a back-office administrative task into a strategic business advantage. The company was originally founded in 1949 by Henry Taub as Automatic Payrolls, Inc. in Paterson, New Jersey. Starting as a manual payroll processing business for small local manufacturers, the firm pioneered the use of computerized payroll processing in the 1950s by adopting IBM mainframe systems. It officially rebranded as Automatic Data Processing, Inc. in August 1961 and went public shortly after in September 1961. Over the decades, ADP shifted its technology from punch cards and mainframe computers to client-server software in the 1990s, and eventually to its current suite of robust cloud-based mobile and desktop platforms. Today, ADP operates primarily through two major business segments: Employer Services and Professional Employer Organization (PEO) Services. The Employer Services segment offers a diverse range of technology-based HCM solutions tailored to different market tiers. This includes ADP RUN for small businesses (1–49 employees), ADP Workforce Now for mid-market companies (50–999 employees), and enterprise solutions like ADP Vantage HCM and ADP GlobalView HCM for large multi-national corporations. Through these platforms, ADP provides integrated tools for payroll processing, tax administration, HR management, talent acquisition, time and attendance tracking, and employee benefits administration. Its PEO segment offers a comprehensive co-employment model that allows small and mid-sized businesses to fully outsource their HR departments to mitigate administrative overhead and scale safely. Financially, ADP is a publicly traded company listed on the NASDAQ exchange under the ticker symbol ADP. For the fiscal year 2025, the company reported a strong financial performance with consolidated revenues reaching $20.6 billion, backed by an operating income of $5.41 billion and a net income of $4.08 billion. Led by Chief Executive Officer Maria Black, the company employs approximately 67,000 associates globally and serves more than 1.1 million clients across over 140 countries, managing payroll logistics for upwards of 42 million workers worldwide. Recognized consistently for its corporate compliance, data security, and workplace diversity, ADP has maintained a multi-decade presence on Fortune Magazine’s list of the World’s Most Admired Companies, cementing its position as a vital cornerstone of global workplace infrastructure.
