Air India is the historic flag carrier airline of India, pioneering the nation's civil aviation sector since its inception. Founded on October 15, 1932, as Tata Airlines by the legendary aviator and industrialist J.R.D. Tata, the carrier commenced operations by flying airmail payloads between Karachi and Bombay. Following World War II, the airline transitioned into a public limited company on July 29, 1946, and was rebranded as Air India. In 1948, following Indian independence, the Government of India acquired a 49% stake, launching international services shortly thereafter with flights to London. The airline was fully nationalized in 1953 under the Air Corporations Act, establishing its long-standing position as India's primary international carrier. In subsequent decades, Air India grew globally, expanding its network across Asia, Europe, North America, Africa, and Australia, and became the first Asian airline to induct a jet aircraft into its fleet with the delivery of a Boeing 707 in 1960. The brand became globally recognized for its distinct "Maharajah" mascot and premium hospitality. However, following the deregulation of Indian aviation in 1994 and a turbulent merger with the domestic carrier Indian Airlines in 2007, the company faced severe operational challenges, structural inefficiencies, and compounding financial debt. A definitive turning point occurred in January 2022 when the Tata Group officially reclaimed ownership of the airline from the Government of India through its holding company, Talace Private Limited, in a landmark privatization deal. Air India Limited operates as an aviation holding company owned by the Tata Group (74.9%) and Singapore Airlines (25.1%), following the completion of a strategic merger with Vistara. The group also operates Air India Express, its wholly-owned low-cost subsidiary specializing in short and medium-haul international and domestic routes. Headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana, Air India maintains its primary hub at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, supported by secondary hubs at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai and Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. The airline has been a member of Star Alliance since July 2014, connecting passengers to a vast global network. Under the leadership of Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran and Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson, the airline is executing "Vihaan.ai," a comprehensive multi-year transformation program. This initiative focuses on modernizing its fleet, overhauling customer service technology, expanding global routes, and reclaiming its status as a world-class global airline. For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, Air India Limited reported a consolidated revenue of ₹78,636 crore.
