ALTT, originally launched as ALTBalaji, was an Indian subscription-based video-on-demand (SVOD) platform that operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of Balaji Telefilms Limited, one of India's most prominent entertainment conglomerates. Registered under the corporate name ALT Digital Media Entertainment Limited, the company was incorporated on July 1, 2015, and officially launched its streaming services on April 16, 2017. Founded by media entrepreneur Ekta Kapoor, the platform represented Balaji Telefilms' strategic foray into the digital over-the-top (OTT) entertainment space, aiming to establish a direct-to-consumer relationship by shifting away from traditional broadcasting formats. Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the business utilized a subscription-based video model to deliver specialized digital content directly to an expansive, digitally connected user base across India and international markets. The core business model of the platform focused heavily on providing original, exclusive, and tailored content, differentiating itself through its massive library of youth-centric, bold, and regional narratives. Over its operational lifespan, the service hosted more than 170 original shows spanning multiple genres, including drama, comedy, romance, thriller, mystery, and crime. To bridge regional gaps, ALTBalaji made its content accessible in various Indian languages, such as Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, and Tamil, catering effectively to audiences in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Technologically, the platform optimized user experience by rendering its content bank across more than 32 distinct user interfaces, supporting devices ranging from smartphones, tablets, and web browsers to specialized streaming platforms like Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and Chromecast. Financially, the entity experienced distinct growth phases, reporting a revenue of INR 49.8 crore for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024. According to its parent company's subsequent financial disclosures, the digital segment accounted for approximately 11% of Balaji Telefilms’ consolidated revenue for the 2025 fiscal period, recording over 160 million views and a subscription volume of 10.6 lakh packages sold. Despite navigating a highly competitive landscape alongside a fund restructuring phase in early 2023, which prompted its initial rebranding from ALTBalaji to ALTT, the platform continued to act as a primary digital growth vehicle for its parent organization. However, the operational trajectory of the platform concluded abruptly on July 25, 2025, when the Government of India issued a ban on the application, citing regulatory compliance violations regarding obscenity and vulgarity in its programming. Following the regulatory intervention, the service became defunct, its official streaming websites were deactivated, and Balaji Telefilms subsequently pivoted its digital strategy by launching Kutingg, a re-positioned, family-friendly media platform designed to capture alternative digital consumer trends.
