Anand, Gujarat
Amul, formally known as Anand Milk Union Limited, is an iconic Indian dairy cooperative society based in Anand, Gujarat. Established on December 14, 1946, the organization was founded as a direct response to the exploitation of local, small-scale dairy farmers by middle-tier traders and agents associated with monopolies like the Polson dairy. Under the visionary leadership of founder Tribhuvandas Patel and the pioneering management of Dr. Verghese Kurien, often hailed as the "Milkman of India," Amul spearheaded the White Revolution (Operation Flood). This monumental movement successfully transformed India from a milk-deficient nation into the world's largest milk producer, establishing a globally recognized socio-economic template for rural empowerment. The operational backbone of the brand is managed by the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (GCMMF), which stands as India’s largest food product marketing organization. Amul functions through a highly integrated, three-tier cooperative model known as the "Anand Pattern." At the grassroots level, individual milk producers form Village Dairy Cooperative Societies, which pool their daily collections. These village units are federated under District-level Milk Producers' Unions (such as Banas Dairy and Dudhsagar Dairy), which in turn roll up into the state-level apex body, GCMMF. This democratic and efficient structure eliminates intermediaries, ensuring that a significant portion of consumer spend is directly funneled back as remunerative returns to the primary producers. Today, the cooperative is jointly owned by approximately 3.6 million milk producers. Amul boasts an incredibly diverse product portfolio that spans milk, butter, ghee, cheese, curd, buttermilk, flavored milk, milk powder, ice cream, paneer, and chocolates. It maintains one of India’s largest distribution networks, incorporating over 48 sales offices, thousands of wholesale distributors, and millions of retail outlets backed by an extensive cold-chain infrastructure. Financially, the brand has witnessed substantial growth, achieving a consolidated revenue from operations of INR 90,000 crore (approximately USD 9.4 billion) for the fiscal year 2025, up from INR 80,000 crore in the previous fiscal year. In addition to its dominant position in the domestic market, Amul has systematically expanded its global footprint, exporting products to over 37 countries including the UAE, USA, Oman, Bangladesh, and Australia. Demonstrating rapid adaptation to modern market dynamics, the cooperative has engaged in landmark international ventures. For instance, in May 2024, Amul partnered with the Michigan Milk Producers Association to launch fresh, Amul-branded milk in the United States using local supplies and original formulations. This was followed by a strategic expansion into European markets in June 2025 through a collaboration with a Spanish dairy cooperative. Through its unique blend of commercial scalability and social enterprise, Amul remains a foundational symbol of cooperative success and rural prosperity.
