Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) is a premier public sector undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. Established on July 16, 1970, in Hyderabad, India, BDL was founded with the primary objective of serving as the manufacturing base for guided missile systems and allied equipment, working toward national self-reliance in defense technologies. The Government of India retains a majority ownership stake of approximately 74.93% in the enterprise. Over more than five decades, BDL has grown from a single-product manufacturer into a sophisticated, multi-product, multi-location weapon systems integrator. The company caters to the diverse strategic needs of all three wings of the Indian Armed Forces—the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Its expansive product portfolio includes Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs), Air-to-Air Missiles (AAMs), Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs), heavy and lightweight torpedoes, underwater guided weapon systems, launchers, countermeasures dispensing systems, and specialized test equipment. Notably, BDL acts as the primary production agency for indigenous missiles developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), such as the Akash, Astra, and Prithvi weapon systems, and it is the sole domestic manufacturer for several categories of ATGMs and torpedoes. The company operates multiple state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities. Three units are located in the state of Telangana—at Kanchanbagh (Hyderabad), Bhanur, and Ibrahimpatnam—and one is positioned in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. To meet escalating defense demands and expand national capacity, BDL has undertaken further expansion by setting up new facilities in Amravati, Maharashtra, and Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. These units utilize advanced production technologies, including Industry 4.0 standards, robotics-operated workshops, and specialized surface-mount technology. Innovation is central to BDL's long-term business model. The company houses a robust, in-house Research and Development division that focuses on product design, engineering, and upgrades. It has increasingly pivoted toward next-generation defense solutions, actively collaborating with startups to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and future-generation technology into its weapon platforms. Beyond original equipment manufacturing, BDL provides vital product life cycle support, refurbishment services, and life extensions for vintage missiles deployed by the military. Financially, BDL is a publicly listed entity traded on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) under the ticker BDL. In recent fiscal years, the company has maintained strong financial performance, reporting a total annual revenue in the range of INR 3,695 crore. Under the leadership of key executives, including CMD Shri Shailesh Vagerwal, BDL emphasizes indigenous manufacturing, frequently achieving local content levels between 80% and 90% across its product lines. Backed by the government's focus on defense exports, BDL has also entered international markets, offering advanced weapon systems to friendly foreign nations and solidifying its position in the global defense supply chain.
