BigBasket, registered as Supermarket Grocery Supplies Pvt. Ltd., is India's leading online grocery delivery platform. Founded in October 2011 by a team of dot-com era entrepreneurs—V.S. Sudhakar, Hari Menon, V.S. Ramesh, Vipul Parekh, and Abhinay Choudhari—the company is headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The founders had previously launched Fabmart.com in 1999, an early e-commerce pioneer, before selling it to a grocery chain in 2006. BigBasket was established with a vision to revolutionize the traditional grocery shopping experience in India by leveraging technology to offer home delivery, thereby helping consumers avoid traffic and crowded supermarkets. The company operates a comprehensive marketplace featuring over 40,000 products from more than 1,000 brands. Its extensive product catalog spans multiple daily essential categories, including fresh fruits and vegetables, groceries and staples like rice and pulses, dairy and bakery items, beverages, snacks, meats, personal care products, and household utilities. BigBasket primarily employs a hybrid business model combining an inventory-led approach and a hyperlocal delivery framework. Under its inventory model, the company sources products directly from leading suppliers, mills, and farmers, storing them in specialized warehouses to optimize quality and supply chain control. To cater to evolving consumer preferences, BigBasket has diversified its operations into distinct service verticals. Its quick-commerce arm, BB Now, provides rapid 15-to-30-minute deliveries for emergency household needs, while BB Daily operates on a subscription-based model for morning essentials like milk and fresh produce. The company also runs BB Instant, an unmanned smart store network, and BB Mandi, a business-to-business (B2B) channel supplying freshly procured fruits and vegetables to local wholesale buyers. Additionally, BigBasket expanded into offline retail with the launch of its technology-driven physical stores called "Fresho." Private labels play a massive role in its business strategy, contributing over one-third of total revenue through higher-margin distinct lines like organic and premium consumer goods. Financially, BigBasket has scaled significantly. In May 2021, the Indian conglomerate Tata Group, through its subsidiary Tata Digital, acquired a 64% majority stake in the company at a valuation of $1.85 billion. Subsequent funding rounds, including a $200 million investment in January 2023, elevated the company's valuation to approximately $3.2 billion. For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024 (FY24), BigBasket reported consolidated operational revenues of INR 10,061.9 crore, reflecting a 6.27% increase from the previous year. Through strategic cost-management practices, including reductions in advertising and employee benefit expenses, the company successfully narrowed its net losses by over 20% to INR 1,415 crore. Led by CEO Hari Menon, BigBasket continues to focus on operational efficiency and its fast-growing quick commerce segment as it aligns its corporate strategy toward a planned initial public offering (IPO).
