BlackBerry Limited, originally founded as Research In Motion (RIM) on March 7, 1984, by Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin, is a Canadian technology and software company. Headquartered in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, the company operates globally, providing intelligent software, security systems, and enterprise services to governments and major industries worldwide. While historically celebrated as a pioneer and global leader in the smartphone industry during the 2000s, BlackBerry has since completed a major strategic pivot to become a pure-play software provider specializing in cybersecurity, secure communications, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The early history of the company is defined by its foundational work in wireless data technology. In 1999, the company introduced the first BlackBerry device, which functioned as a two-way pager and quickly gained popularity among professionals due to its secure, "always-on" email features. By 2002, the company released its first integrated smartphone, supporting voice calling, text messaging, web browsing, and push email. The BlackBerry brand, named for the resemblance of its keyboard buttons to the drupelets of a blackberry fruit, dominated the corporate and enterprise market for a decade. At its operational peak around 2011 to 2013, the company claimed a global user base of over 85 million subscribers, earning a reputation for unmatched mobile security and its popular BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) platform. However, the rapid evolution of consumer-oriented mobile platforms like Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android significantly eroded BlackBerry’s hardware market share, leading the company to discontinue its internal hardware development and mobile manufacturing. In 2016, under the leadership of Executive Chairman and CEO John Chen, BlackBerry successfully transitioned from consumer hardware into a dedicated enterprise software company. Today, the business operates through core segments that include Secure Communications and its high-performance QNX division. The Secure Communications branch provides endpoint management, mission-critical communications, and crisis event software to heavily regulated industries, including financial institutions, medical organizations, and G7/G20 government agencies. BlackBerry’s specialized platforms, such as BlackBerry UEM, BlackBerry AtHoc, and SecuSUITE, deliver end-to-end encryption and zero-trust identity control to prevent hacking and ransomware attacks. Simultaneously, BlackBerry has established a commanding position in the automotive and industrial sectors via its QNX division. BlackBerry QNX provides safe, reliable, and secure real-time operating systems (RTOS), hypervisors, and development tools used by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers. Today, BlackBerry QNX software is embedded in more than 275 million vehicles globally, powering advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), digital cockpits, and connected car architecture. Currently led by CEO John Giamatteo, the publicly traded company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: BB) and the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX: BB), maintaining its legacy of digital trust and mission-critical engineering.
