Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is a prominent Indian central public sector undertaking and one of the country's largest and oldest telecommunications service providers. Headquartered at Bharat Sanchar Bhawan, New Delhi, the company operates under the ownership of the Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Government of India. Incorporated on September 15, 2000, and officially commencing operations on October 1, 2000, BSNL took over the business of providing telecom services and network management from the erstwhile Central Government Departments of Telecom Services (DTS) and Telecom Operations (DTO). It holds the prestigious 'Miniratna' status, a designation assigned to highly reputed and value-driven public sector enterprises in India. The core operations of BSNL span a comprehensive range of telecommunications services, structured into wireline, wireless mobile (GSM), broadband, and enterprise solutions verticals. BSNL's nationwide telecommunications network is one of the most extensive in the world, covering all district, sub-divisional, Tehsil, and block headquarters, and stretching into over 5.6 lakh villages. Characterized by its unmatched reach, BSNL operates across the entirety of India, with the exception of the metropolitan cities of New Delhi and Mumbai, where telecom services are historically managed by its sister PSU, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL). The company plays a critical socio-economic role by bridging the rural-urban digital divide, ensuring connectivity in highly remote and inaccessible regions, such as the North-Eastern territory and the Siachen Glacier, where private operators maintain a limited presence. In its infrastructure and technology segments, BSNL possesses a vast digital network incorporating an extensive optical fiber cable (OFC) footprint spanning over 849,990 route kilometers, alongside nationwide microwave networks, satellite stations, and tens of thousands of telephone exchanges and base transceiver stations (BTS). The company provides state-of-the-art enterprise services, including MPLS, Point-to-Point (P2P), and Internet Leased Lines to corporate clients, while its retail internet segment operates under major brands like 'DataOne' for broadband and 'Bharat Fibre' for FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) solutions. As a pioneer in national telecom milestones, BSNL was the first operator to eliminate incoming domestic roaming charges. It launched its pan-India 3G services in 2009 and is currently expanding its next-generation indigenous 4G network using domestic technology through major consortium partnerships, laying the technical foundation for a seamless transition into 5G services. Financially, BSNL is a 100% government-owned entity. Supported by robust state-backed capital expenditure injections, including a significant multi-crore capex approval to bolster its nationwide network rollouts, BSNL successfully reported a net profit of INR 262 crore for Q3 FY25, marking its strategic return to operational profitability. Managed by a dedicated Board of Directors and powered by a substantial national workforce, BSNL continues to align its corporate vision with India’s overarching Digital India initiative, prioritizing customer-focused service excellence, technological self-reliance, and universal connectivity.
