CESC Limited, incorporated in its current form in 1978 and originally founded in 1899 as the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation, is India's first fully integrated electrical utility company. Headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, CESC serves as the flagship power utility of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG). The company maintains a comprehensive operational presence across the entire power value chain, spanning generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. The core operations of CESC are divided into power generation and distribution. The company owns and operates a robust thermal power generation portfolio with an aggregate capacity of approximately 2,140 MW. Key generation assets include the Budge Budge Generating Station (750 MW), Haldia Energy (600 MW), Dhariwal Infrastructure in Maharashtra (600 MW), Southern Generating Station (135 MW), and the Crescent plant (40 MW). Over 80% of its license area consumer requirements are met through its own generation facilities, partially fueled by its captive coal mines. Beyond conventional thermal power, CESC is aggressively expanding into renewable energy through its subsidiary, Purvah Green Power Private Limited, with a strategic target to set up 3,200 MW of hybrid renewable capacity by FY29 and an ultimate goal of reaching 10 GW. In its distribution segment, CESC acts as the sole power distribution licensee for an area of 567 square kilometers across Kolkata and Howrah, serving approximately 3.4 million consumers, including domestic, industrial, and commercial users. It operates an extensive distribution network across extra-high voltage, high voltage, and low voltage levels. The company has successfully replicated this model in other regions through subsidiaries and franchises. It holds a long-term distribution license for Greater Noida via Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) and recently expanded its footprint by securing the Chandigarh distribution license. Additionally, it operates distribution franchises in Kota, Bharatpur, and Bikaner in Rajasthan, and Malegaon in Maharashtra. CESC is highly regarded for its operational efficiency, regularly maintaining transmission and distribution (T&D) losses well below regulatory caps. Financially, CESC Limited is a publicly traded company listed on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, the company reported a consolidated revenue of approximately INR 17,400 crore. The organization is led under the broader guidance of Group Chairman Sanjiv Goenka, alongside an experienced management team including Vineet Sikka (Managing Director of Distribution) and Rajarshi Banerjee (CFO). To modernize infrastructure, the company is implementing advanced utility technologies, including 80 MWh Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Kolkata and Noida to efficiently manage peak loads.
