Kolkata, West Bengal
Coal India Limited (CIL) is an Indian state-owned coal mining corporation and a prominent Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the administrative control of the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. Headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, CIL stands as the single largest coal-producing company in the world and ranks among the largest corporate employers in India. Originally incorporated in November 1975 as Coal Mines Authority Limited following the nationalization of the country's coal sector, the company was subsequently organized to enable higher organizational, operational, and logistics efficiency across the domestic energy landscape. The core operations of CIL are strategically vital to India's economy, as the company accounts for approximately 75% to 83% of the nation's overall domestic coal production. Because coal satisfies nearly 40% of India's primary commercial energy requirements and fuels over half of its total electricity generation, CIL serves as the primary backbone for the country’s power, steel, cement, fertilizer, and brick manufacturing sectors. The company operates a massive, interconnected infrastructure across eight provincial states of India, managing 85 distinct mining areas. As of early 2026, CIL oversees nearly 295 working mines, which comprise 121 underground mines, 163 opencast mines, and 11 mixed mines, alongside 13 active coal washeries designed for coking and non-coking coal beneficiation. CIL functions through a decentralized structure consisting of several fully owned Indian subsidiary companies. These include major regional mining entities such as Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), Western Coalfields Limited (WCL), South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL)—which hosts the Gevra mine, Asia's largest opencast coal mine—Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), and Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). It also operates the Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDIL) for dedicated exploration and consultancy, alongside newer green energy verticals like CIL Navi Karniya Urja Limited and CIL Solar PV Limited. Additionally, CIL maintains a foreign subsidiary, Coal India Africana Limitada, located in Mozambique. Financially, CIL is a publicly traded corporate giant listed on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Backed by a workforce of over 212,000 employees as of April 2026, the company achieved a stellar raw coal production of 768.19 million tonnes (MT) for the fiscal year 2025-26. Led by Chairman and Managing Director B. Sairam, Coal India heavily integrates corporate social responsibility and environmental management frameworks. The company has committed to substituting traditional road transport with mechanized piped conveyor belts and is aggressively setting up utility-scale solar installations to foster a clean energy transition while securing India's long-term energy independence.
