Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) is a premier Schedule A, Miniratna (Category-I) Central Public Sector Enterprise operating under the administrative control of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Government of India. Headquartered in Kochi, Kerala, the company was incorporated in March 1972 as a fully owned government entity and has since evolved into India's largest and most modern shipbuilding and ship repair facility. As the nation’s first Greenfield shipyard, CSL occupies a position of strategic importance in strengthening India’s maritime infrastructure and defense capabilities. The core operations of CSL are broadly divided into two major business segments: shipbuilding and ship repair. In its shipbuilding division, the company possesses a highly diversified product profile, designing and constructing a wide variety of vessels for defense, commercial, and offshore markets. For the defense sector, CSL is famously distinguished as the only Indian shipyard capable of building aircraft carriers, having successfully delivered India's first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, to the Indian Navy. Its portfolio also includes bulk carriers, tankers, platform supply vessels, fast patrol vessels, and cutting-edge commercial models such as zero-emission feeder container vessels and electric autonomous passenger ferries. CSL’s ship repair segment holds a dominant market share in India, offering specialized upgrades, scheduled maintenance, and life extensions for complex naval warships, coast guard vessels, commercial tankers, and oil exploration rigs. To support its expansive operations, CSL maintains state-of-the-art infrastructure. Its main shipyard in Kochi features advanced dry docks, supplemented by the International Ship Repair Facility located on leased land at Kochi Port. Expanding its geographical footprint, CSL manages regional ship repair units across India, including facilities in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Port Blair. It also operates key subsidiaries like Hooghly Cochin Shipyard Limited in West Bengal and Udupi Cochin Shipyard Limited in Karnataka. Additionally, CSL contributes to the industry through its Marine Engineering Training Institute, which provides specialized graduate engineering courses. Financially, CSL is publicly traded on both the National Stock Exchange and the Bombay Stock Exchange under the ticker COCHINSHIP. The Government of India remains the majority stakeholder, holding approximately 67.91% of the equity share capital. The company has maintained a consistent track record of profitability and dividend payouts. Backed by a robust order book exceeding INR 21,150 crore, CSL continues to secure high-value contracts, including a recent INR 5,000 crore defense tender for Next Generation Survey Vessels and substantial commercial orders from European clients, reinforcing its reputation on the global maritime front.
