Dell Technologies Inc. is an American multinational technology company headquartered in Round Rock, Texas. Founded in 1984 by Michael Dell in his University of Texas dorm room, the company initially operated under the name PC's Limited. It revolutionized the personal computer industry by pioneering a direct-to-consumer sales model, bypassing traditional retail networks to offer customized, high-quality PCs at competitive prices. The company went public in 1988, changing its name to Dell Computer Corporation and eventually to Dell Inc. in 2003 as it expanded into consumer electronics, servers, data storage, and IT services. Throughout its history, Dell has undergone major structural transformations. In 2013, Michael Dell partnered with private equity firm Silver Lake Partners to take the company private in a $24.4 billion leveraged buyout to refocus its strategy away from public market scrutiny. In September 2016, Dell completed the largest technology merger in history at the time by acquiring enterprise storage giant EMC Corporation for approximately $67 billion, resulting in the creation of Dell Technologies. The company returned to public trading in December 2018. Today, Dell Technologies operates through two primary business segments. The Client Solutions Group (CSG) focuses on commercial and consumer hardware, producing desktop PCs, notebooks, tablets, monitors, and peripherals under the Dell and Alienware brands. The Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) acts as a major growth engine, delivering advanced enterprise solutions including servers, storage systems, networking hardware, and cloud computing architecture. In recent years, Dell has shifted heavily toward artificial intelligence, multi-cloud management, and software-defined infrastructure. Its portfolio features AI-optimized hardware platforms and Dell APEX, an infrastructure-as-a-service model designed to streamline resource management across diverse environments. Strategically, the company has also refined its enterprise footprint, spinning out its remaining shares in VMware in 2021 and selling its cybersecurity unit, Secureworks, to Sophos in 2025. Globally, Dell Technologies employs approximately 97,000 to 120,000 people and maintains a commanding market share in personal computing, computer manufacturing, and data storage. Led by Founder, Chairman, and CEO Michael Dell, the company has consistently ranked among the top corporations on the Fortune 500 list, driven by expanding global demand for data-intensive technology solutions, corporate digital transformation initiatives, and next-generation AI infrastructure.
