Eli Lilly Capability Centre India (LCCI) operates as a major strategic extension and global capability hub for the prominent multinational pharmaceutical organization Eli Lilly and Company. Headquartered globally in Indianapolis, Indiana, Eli Lilly originally established its footprint in India in 1993, eventually launching its first dedicated global capability center in Bengaluru in January 2016. Driven by substantial business expansion and a growing reliance on India’s deep technological and scientific talent pool, the company significantly broadened its infrastructure by setting up its second major technology hub in Hyderabad, Telangana, which became operationalized around mid-2025. The primary purpose of the Eli Lilly Capability Centre is to advance the parent firm’s overarching digital strategy, enhance global operational efficiencies, and drive core healthcare innovation. Rather than acting as a standard back-office IT support system, LCCI functions as a high-value, centralized technology nerve center that links closely with Lilly’s research and manufacturing facilities worldwide. The operational focus of the centers spans across deep tech disciplines and sophisticated digital capabilities, including artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, automation, software product engineering, cloud computing, and complex data analytics. By leveraging these modern technological tools, the engineering and data science teams at LCCI design advanced solutions to accelerate the clinical development, discovery, and global delivery of life-changing next-generation medicines. These efforts directly support therapeutic advancements in critical healthcare segments such as diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's disease, complex cancers, immunology, and neurodegeneration. In addition to technological engineering, the capability center handles vital global business services and clinical trial capabilities. This includes managing trial operations, local site activations, regulatory compliance, legal guidelines, and clinical finance, which helps optimize investigator networks particularly across the Asia-Pacific region. To fuel its massive expansion, Eli Lilly has invested heavily in its Indian hubs, notably allocating around $180 million for the high-tech Hyderabad site alone. This expansion involves scaling its specialized local workforce by recruiting between 1,000 and 1,500 highly skilled professionals, including software engineers, data scientists, and clinical integration specialists. Led by regional leadership, including Managing Director Manish Arora for the Hyderabad arm, LCCI integrates smoothly into Eli Lilly’s broader global strategy. By utilizing India's robust life sciences ecosystem and digital talent pool, the Eli Lilly Capability Centre enables the parent company to resolve intricate global health challenges and fulfill its core mission of uniting caring with discovery to make life better for patients around the world.
