Envestnet, Inc. is a prominent American financial technology corporation that develops and distributes wealth management software and data solutions to financial advisors and institutions. Founded in 1999 in Chicago by Judson Bergman and Bill Crager, the company was established to provide independent financial advisors with integrated, institutional-grade, web-based tools to effectively compete with large financial institutions. The name "Envestnet" reflects a strategic blend of "investing" and the internet "network," signaling its purpose to build a connected financial ecosystem. The company's core offering is an advanced advisory platform that functions as a Turnkey Asset Management Program (TAMP). This integrated ecosystem streamlines a comprehensive suite of wealth management services, including financial planning, portfolio construction, data aggregation, research, and due diligence on investment managers. Additionally, the platform provides robust front- and back-office solutions featuring portfolio trading, active tax management, direct indexing, estate planning, risk assessment, and client reporting. Through these capabilities, Envestnet enables enterprises and advisors to scale operations, automate workflows, and deliver personalized financial planning. Over more than two decades, Envestnet scaled rapidly through organic growth and an aggressive acquisition strategy. Key milestones include going public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: ENV) in 2010 and subsequently acquiring major industry players such as Tamarac and Prima Capital Holdings in 2012, Placemark Holdings in 2014, and financial-planning software provider Finance Logix in 2015. It also launched innovative embedded market solutions like the Envestnet Insurance Exchange and Credit Exchange. By early 2025, the platform oversaw more than $6 trillion in total assets and powered upwards of 20 million investor accounts. A new chapter began in late 2024 when Envestnet transitioned back to a private entity after being acquired by a consortium led by Bain Capital Private Equity in a transaction valued at approximately $4.5 billion. This buyer group included major institutional asset managers BlackRock, Fidelity Investments, Franklin Templeton, and State Street Global Advisors. Following the take-private transaction, the company appointed Chris Todd as Chief Executive Officer to lead its next phase of innovation, which includes a committed $1 billion investment in research and development through 2030 to integrate artificial intelligence into portfolio construction and advisor workflows. Headquartered in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, Envestnet employs approximately 3,000 workers globally. Its technology and data services are utilized by more than 109,000 financial advisors and thousands of companies, including 17 of the 20 largest U.S. banks, 48 of the 50 largest wealth management firms, and over 500 of the largest Registered Investment Advisers (RIAs). The firm remains committed to its core mission of empowering financial service providers with advanced technology to make comprehensive financial wellness a reality for everyone.
