GAIL (India) Limited, formerly known as the Gas Authority of India Ltd., is India's leading natural gas company and a prominent Maharatna Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSE) under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. Established in August 1984, the company was initially entrusted with the construction, operation, and maintenance of the historic Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline project, which laid the foundation for the natural gas market in India. Headquartered in New Delhi, GAIL has evolved from a single gas transmission company into a diversified energy conglomerate with an extensive presence across the entire natural gas value chain, including exploration and production, processing, transmission, distribution, marketing, petrochemicals, liquid hydrocarbons, and renewable energy. The core of GAIL’s operations is its massive natural gas pipeline network, which spans over 16,420 kilometers and accounts for approximately 66% of India's gas transmission and over 50% of its gas trading market share. As a crucial player in the National Gas Grid, the company is actively expanding its network by constructing thousands of kilometers of additional pipelines. Beyond natural gas, GAIL owns and operates a 2,040-kilometer LPG pipeline system connecting Jamnagar in Gujarat to Loni in Uttar Pradesh, alongside five gas processing plants that produce liquid hydrocarbons like LPG, propane, and naphtha, contributing nearly 20% of the domestic LPG supplied through sister public sector units. In the petrochemical sector, GAIL operates one of India's largest gas-based integrated petrochemical facilities in Pata, Uttar Pradesh, with a production capacity of 810 KTPA of polymers. The company further extends its petrochemical footprint through significant equity stakes in joint ventures like the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) in Assam and ONGC Petro-additions Limited (OPaL) in Gujarat. Additionally, GAIL is a pioneer in the City Gas Distribution (CGD) business, supplying compressed natural gas (CNG) and piped natural gas (PNG) across 72 geographical areas through various subsidiaries and joint ventures, including major metropolitan operations in Delhi and Mumbai. Globally, GAIL has established a strong presence to secure energy resources, boasting a robust LNG sourcing portfolio of around 15.5 MMTPA. It operates wholly owned subsidiaries in Singapore and the United States (GAIL Global USA Inc.) for LNG trading, overseas investments, and shale gas assets, and maintains offices in key locations like Houston and Singapore. Domestically, GAIL is also embracing the green energy transition by investing in wind and solar power generation, exploring green hydrogen production, and blending hydrogen into city gas networks. Publicly traded on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), GAIL is currently led by Chief Executive Officer Deepak K. Gupta, driving India's vision toward a cleaner, gas-based economy.
