Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) is a premier warship building company in India, operating under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence. Established in 1884 as a small privately owned river steam workshop on the banks of the Hooghly River in Kolkata, it was renamed Garden Reach Workshop in 1916 and nationalized by the Government of India in 1960. The company was subsequently renamed Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited in 1977. In recognition of its consistent financial and physical performance, the shipyard was awarded Miniratna Category-I status in 2006 and elevated to the prestigious Navratna status in June 2026. GRSE is strategically vital to India's defense preparedness, primarily catering to the shipbuilding requirements of the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. It achieved the historic milestone of becoming the first Indian shipyard to design and deliver 100 warships to the Indian maritime forces, with over 111 warships built to date. Its extensive product profile includes guided-missile frigates, anti-submarine warfare corvettes, missile corvettes, fleet replenishment tankers, landing ship tanks, landing craft utilities, survey vessels, offshore patrol vessels, and fast attack crafts. In addition to defense platforms, GRSE builds commercial and scientific vessels, such as oceanographic research ships, acoustic research vessels, passenger ferries, and dredgers. The company operates advanced infrastructure across three dedicated shipbuilding facilities in Kolkata, including the Main Works Unit and the Rajabagan Dockyard, featuring CAD centers, dry docks, building berths, and all-weather wet basins. Beyond primary shipbuilding, which accounts for the vast majority of its revenue, GRSE is highly versatile, operating an Engineering and Engine Division. This includes a dedicated diesel engine plant in Ranchi, spanning 62 acres, utilized for the assembly, testing, overhaul, and licensed production of marine diesel engines. The engineering division also manufactures specialized deck machinery and portable steel bridges. Aligned with the Government of India's "Make in India" initiative, GRSE focuses heavily on indigenization, achieving over 90% indigenous content in several delivered vessels. The company is actively expanding its global footprint under the "Make for World" policy, exporting warships to friendly nations like Mauritius and the Seychelles, and bidding for international commercial orders. Financially, GRSE is publicly traded on the NSE and BSE, maintaining a robust, virtually debt-free capital structure with substantial cash reserves. As a leading Central Public Sector Enterprise, the Government of India retains a majority 74.5% ownership stake in the company.
