Ahmedabad, Gujarat
Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Limited (GMDC), established in May 1963 by the Government of Gujarat, is a premier state-owned mining and mineral processing enterprise headquartered in Ahmedabad, India. Over more than six decades of operations, GMDC has positioned itself as India's largest merchant seller of lignite and the country's second-largest lignite-producing company. As a critically stable public sector undertaking, the Government of Gujarat maintains a commanding promoter stake of 74%, while the remaining shares are publicly traded on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The core operations of GMDC are structurally divided into two major commercial segments: Mining and Power. In the mining vertical, the extraction and marketing of lignite serves as the foundational driver of the company's financial performance, historically contributing between 85% and 90% of its total operating income. GMDC actively operates multiple lignite mines clustered across key geographic regions in Gujarat, including Kutch, South Gujarat, and Bhavnagar, catering to over 25% of the state's total lignite demand. This vital energy mineral is supplied extensively to diversified industrial consumers spanning the textiles, chemicals, ceramics, bricks, steel, and captive power sectors. To ensure long-term revenue visibility and sustain aggregate production above 10 million tonnes per annum, GMDC is aggressively executing a phased expansion plan that includes developing six newly allocated lignite blocks alongside three strategic coal blocks located in Odisha. Beyond its foundational lignite operations, GMDC explores and processes an expansive portfolio of industrial minerals and base metals, including bauxite, fluorspar, manganese, silica sand, limestone, bentonite, and ball clay. The company’s bauxite operations are located within clustered pocket deposits in the Kutch and Devbhumi Dwarka districts, complemented by a specialized calcination plant at Gadhsisha. In line with modern market demands, GMDC is executing strategic plans to scale its non-lignite mineral revenue share to approximately 50% in the medium term. This includes developing downstream capabilities in cement manufacturing, exploring underground copper mines near Ambaji, and establishing a sophisticated processing plant for Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in Chhota Udepur to supply critical components for permanent magnets, electric vehicles, and green technologies. In its Power segment, GMDC owns and operates the Akrimota Thermal Power Station, a 250 MW (2x125 MW) lignite-based power plant situated at Nani-Chher in the Lakhpat Taluka of the Kutch District. To mitigate carbon risk and align with national environmental objectives, the corporation has successfully diversified its energy matrix into renewable infrastructure, building a portfolio of wind and solar power generation assets. Financially, GMDC functions as a highly resilient, zero-debt entity with substantial unencumbered liquidity and a market capitalization exceeding INR 18,000 crore. Guided by senior administrative leadership, including Chairman Dr. Hasmukh Adhia and Managing Director Roopwant Singh, the corporation actively integrates corporate social responsibility initiatives focused on inclusive rural education, public healthcare, and regional environmental sustainability.
