Founded in 2014 by Arun Prakash M, Balamurugan SP, and the late Sridevi Arunprakash, the company started its journey as a popular YouTube channel in 2011 posting video tutorials in languages like Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi. Recognizing a critical gap in the market for high-quality technology education tailored for non-native English speakers, the founders left their corporate roles to formally incorporate the business in Chennai, India. GUVI was incubated at prestigious institutions, including the Rural Technology and Business Incubator (RTBI) at IIT Madras and the Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) at IIM Ahmedabad. The platform operates on an integrated "Learn-Practice-Hire" model, offering a comprehensive suite of self-paced, instructor-led, and gamified online coding programs. Its curriculum encompasses high-demand fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, machine learning, full-stack development, Python, Java, and AWS Cloud infrastructure. While the instructional video content is delivered in vernacular languages—including Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Arabic, and Swahili—the accompanying text resources remain in English, giving learners a flexible and comfortable environment to upskill. GUVI's unique approach has successfully bridged the linguistic and geographical divide in tech education, driving substantial impact across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in India. The platform has upskilled over 3 million learners and maintains partnerships with more than 1,000 engineering colleges and 2,000 corporate clients, connecting talent with modern IT placements. Notably, its community-driven initiatives have garnered major recognition; its "AI for India" workshop in 2021 achieved a Guinness World Record by training over 112,000 participants simultaneously, while its "AI-for-Women" campaign has empowered over 30,000 women with specialized technical expertise. Before its institutional transition, GUVI raised approximately $3.79 million across multiple venture funding rounds from backers like Gray Matters Capital's edLABS and the Education Catalyst Fund. On September 29, 2022, HCL Technologies acquired a majority stake in the company for a valuation of approximately ₹134 crore (around $16 million USD), rebranding the entity as HCL GUVI. Operating as a subsidiary under the leadership of Founder and CEO Arun Prakash M, the organization continues to scale its workforce, growing to more than 750 team members.
