Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is a premier Indian public sector aerospace and defence company headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Established on December 23, 1940, by Walchand Hirachand as Hindustan Aircraft Limited, it was later merged with Aeronautics India Limited and Aircraft Manufacturing Depot, Kanpur, to officially form Hindustan Aeronautics Limited on October 1, 1964. Governed under the management of the Indian Ministry of Defence, HAL was conferred the prestigious "Maharatna" status by the Government of India in October 2024, granting it enhanced strategic and operational autonomy. The company is primarily engaged in the design, development, manufacture, repair, overhaul, upgrade, and servicing of a wide range of aerospace products. Its extensive portfolio includes fighter aircraft, trainers, transport aircraft, military and civil helicopters, aero-engines, avionics, systems, accessories, and aerospace structures. HAL operates a vast infrastructure network across India organized into five main complexes—the Bangalore Complex, MiG Complex, Helicopter Complex, Accessories Complex, and Design Complex—which encompass 21 production divisions and 9 dedicated Research & Design (R&D) centres across several states. HAL's core manufacturing operations include prominent indigenous platforms such as the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A, the HTT-40 Basic Trainer, the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv, the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand, and the Light Utility Helicopter (LUH). It also produces civil aviation platforms like the Hindustan-228 transport aircraft. In addition to in-house R&D, HAL has a long history of licensed production and technology transfer agreements with global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), manufacturing aircraft like the Su-30 MKI and Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer, as well as collaborating with international engine manufacturers. The company's primary customers are the Indian Defence Services, including the Indian Air Force, Indian Army, Indian Navy, and the Indian Coast Guard, with HAL-supplied platforms constituting a major portion of their active fleet strength. Beyond conventional aviation, HAL is a critical partner for the space vehicle and missile programs of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), manufacturing structures like propellant tanks and heat shields. It has also established a growing export presence in over 25 countries. Financially, HAL is a publicly traded company listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). As of March 2025, the Government of India maintains a majority stake of 71.64%. For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, HAL recorded a provisional operating revenue of INR 30,400 crore, supported by a robust order book of INR 1,84,000 crore. Managed by a board led by Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Kota, HAL employs a regular workforce of approximately 24,000 personnel.
