Hitachi Construction Machinery operations in India primarily function through two major entities: Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Company Private Limited, a long-standing joint venture, and the newly established Hitachi Construction Machinery Development Center India Private Limited. Together, these entities represent a major force in India's heavy machinery, manufacturing, and engineering sectors, catering to both domestic infrastructure needs and global product development. Tata Hitachi Construction Machinery Company began its journey in 1961 as the Construction Equipment Division of TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company, which is now Tata Motors. In 1984, the company entered into a technical collaboration with Japan's Hitachi Construction Machinery to manufacture hydraulic excavators. Over the decades, Hitachi increased its stake in the joint venture, growing from a 20 percent share in 2000 to 40 percent in 2005, and finally securing a majority 60 percent ownership in 2010, with Tata Motors retaining the remaining 40 percent. The company officially rebranded from Telcon to Tata Hitachi in 2012. Headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, the joint venture is led by Managing Director Sandeep Singh and stands as a leading provider of hydraulic excavators in India. The company operates two primary state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities to support its extensive product lineup. The Dharwad plant in Karnataka, operational since 1999, specializes in manufacturing backhoe loaders and excavators up to the 20-ton class. The Kharagpur plant in West Bengal, established in 2009, focuses on 20-ton class excavators, wheel loaders, and rigid dump trucks. The company's diverse product portfolio ranges from mini excavators and massive mining excavators to customized machines and attachments like rock breakers. Popular models include the Shinrai backhoe loader series and the Zaxis and EX series excavators, supported by a network of over 50 dealerships and specialized workshops across India. To augment its manufacturing footprint, Hitachi Construction Machinery expanded its Indian operations in late December 2024 by establishing the Hitachi Construction Machinery Development Center India Private Limited. Located in Hubballi, Karnataka, this consolidated subsidiary focuses strictly on the development and design of construction machinery. The center represents an investment split of 94 percent by Hitachi Construction Machinery and 6 percent by Hitachi Construction Machinery Tierra. Led by Managing Director Takahiro Kobayashi and Deputy Managing Director Biplab Hore, the facility leverages India's rich pool of mechanical engineering and IT talent. The center utilizes Computer Aided Engineering to run complex technical simulations, analysis, and calculations to improve structure strength, thermal transmission, and noise reduction. It aims to scale its workforce to approximately 200 engineers and designers by fiscal year 2027 to accelerate global product development for hydraulic excavators and wheel loaders.
