Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL) is a prominent, research-driven biologicals company and a market leader in the veterinary and human vaccine sectors in India. Established in 1982 by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) under the guidance of Dr. Verghese Kurien, the company was founded with the primary objective of making modern, high-quality vaccines available to Indian farmers at affordable prices. Over the decades, IIL has expanded its scope significantly, establishing itself as an "One Health" organization that seamlessly integrates animal and human healthcare solutions. Headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana, the company operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the NDDB and is led by Managing Director Dr. K. Anand Kumar. The company operates across two main business verticals: Animal Health and Human Health, manufacturing a diverse portfolio of over 150 products. In the veterinary segment, IIL is one of the largest producers of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines globally, marketed under its flagship 'Raksha' brand. It also achieved a historic milestone by introducing 'Cysvax', the world’s first vaccine against Porcine Cysticercosis, and remains the sole producer of companion animal vaccines in India. In 1998, at the specific request of the Government of India, IIL ventured into human health to help phase out older, unsafe sheep brain-derived nerve tissue vaccines. This led to the launch of 'Abhayrab', a purified vero cell rabies vaccine that has grown to become the world’s largest-selling anti-rabies vaccine for humans, commanding a substantial market share in India. IIL is also a critical supplier of pediatric vaccines—such as DPT, Tetanus Toxoid, and Hepatitis B—to India’s Universal Immunization Programme (UIP). Recent breakthroughs include 'Havisure', India's first indigenously developed Hepatitis A vaccine, and 'Mabella', a live-attenuated measles and rubella vaccine for children. To support its extensive production needs, IIL operates state-of-the-art, WHO-GMP and ISO-certified manufacturing facilities located in Gachibowli (Hyderabad), Karakapatla (Hyderabad), and Udhagamandalam (Ooty), Tamil Nadu. Additionally, it operates a subsidiary in New Zealand, Pristine Biologicals Ltd, which produces high-quality serum used in vaccine manufacturing. The company is heavily invested in research and development, employing over 60 dedicated scientists at its advanced DSIR-approved R&D center in Hyderabad, collaborating globally with institutions like Griffith University and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on cutting-edge research, including needle-free intranasal technologies and Zika vaccines. Financially robust, IIL reported revenues of approximately $179 million for the fiscal period ending in 2025, supported by a strong capital structure and an employee base of nearly 2,000 professionals. Backed by a vast cold-chain distribution network, IIL successfully ensures its affordable healthcare solutions reach remote domestic corners and over 50 export destinations worldwide.
