Inflection AI, Inc. is an American technology company and artificial intelligence studio focused on developing human-centered, emotionally intelligent AI systems for personal and enterprise use. Founded in early 2022 by Mustafa Suleyman (co-founder of Google DeepMind), Reid Hoffman (co-founder of LinkedIn and partner at Greylock), and Karén Simonyan (prominent DeepMind researcher), the company was established as a public benefit corporation. Headquartered in Palo Alto, California, Inflection AI set out with the mission to shift digital interactions from purely transactional to deeply relational, prioritizing emotional intelligence, empathetic conversation, and supportive user engagement. The company first gained widespread recognition with the launch of Pi (short for "personal intelligence"), a supportive and empathetic conversational AI chatbot designed to act as a kind and supportive companion. To power its products, Inflection AI developed advanced machine learning hardware and proprietary large language models. This massive technological undertaking was fueled by substantial institutional capital. In June 2023, the company raised a historic $1.3 billion Series E funding round led by Microsoft, Reid Hoffman, Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt, and NVIDIA, which valued the startup at $4 billion. This funding allowed Inflection AI to secure critical H100 GPU compute infrastructure necessary for training frontier models. In March 2024, Inflection AI underwent a major structural transformation following a significant "brain drain" and corporate restructuring. Microsoft hired co-founders Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan, alongside a large portion of Inflection’s core technical team, to lead its newly formed Microsoft AI division. To facilitate this transition without a traditional acquisition, Microsoft paid Inflection AI a $650 million licensing fee to use its intellectual property and models, which also served to settle departing equity and make investors whole. Following this pivot, Inflection AI restructured its leadership, appointing Sean White as Chief Executive Officer. Under White’s guidance, the company shifted from a high-burn startup focused on building expensive next-generation foundational models to a lean B2B enterprise AI studio. Retaining a core workforce of approximately 70 employees, Inflection AI began leveraging its existing empathetic conversational frameworks to help corporations build, customize, and fine-tune enterprise-grade AI solutions. The company further expanded its enterprise capabilities through strategic partnerships, such as an implementation collaboration with Intel, and targeted acquisitions, including the software startups BoostKPI, Jelled.ai, and Boundaryless Group. Today, Inflection AI operates as a private company, with its cap table and governance structured around major institutional stakeholders, including Greylock Partners, Microsoft, and NVIDIA, while maintaining its core focus on practical, secure, and relational artificial intelligence deployments.
