INOX Leisure Limited, incorporated in November 1999, was one of India's premier multiplex entertainment companies before its landmark integration into the broader domestic entertainment ecosystem. Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the company began its commercial operations in 2002 and rapidly grew to establish a massive, pan-India presence. Over more than two decades, INOX became a household name by redefining the movie-going experience, transitioning it from traditional single-screen cinema viewings into luxury, multi-screen entertainment hubs that prioritized premium customer comfort, high-end acoustics, and advanced projection technologies. The core business operations of INOX Leisure were focused heavily on movie exhibition, alongside active film distribution and production efforts. To supplement its primary box office ticket sales, the company developed robust, high-margin ancillary revenue streams. These included expansive in-house food and beverage concessions, digital and physical advertising services within its theater premises, and integrated gaming and restaurant formats designed to enhance the total entertainment duration for its patrons. At its peak as an independent entity, INOX managed a portfolio that spanned over 160 properties and featured nearly 700 screens across more than 70 cities, boasting a total seating capacity that exceeded 150,000 spectators. This scale positioned it firmly as the second-largest cinema exhibition network in the country. Historically, INOX Leisure operated as a publicly traded public limited company, listed on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). It originally served as a vital, consumer-facing diversification venture of the multi-billion dollar INOX Group, a major Indian conglomerate with historical business roots stretching back nearly a century and industrial leadership across industrial gases and cryogenic equipment manufacturing. In a strategic consolidation move that reshaped the landscape of Indian media, PVR Limited announced and completed a comprehensive corporate merger with INOX Leisure Limited, which officially took effect on February 6, 2023. Under this arrangement, INOX Leisure was formally amalgamated, and its legacy assets were combined to form PVR INOX Limited. This merged entity established itself as the absolute largest film exhibition network across India and Sri Lanka, overseeing an unprecedented operational footprint of more than 1,740 screens spread across 110 cities. Today, while operating under the combined corporate management of the PVR INOX banner, the distinct INOX theater brand continues to represent modern cinematic architecture, customer-centric hospitality, and premium out-of-home entertainment.
