Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala
Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), formerly known as Technopark TBI, is the state-level nodal agency under the Government of Kerala, India, dedicated to promoting technology-based entrepreneurship, innovation, and incubation activities. Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, the organization operates as a pivotal government implementing agency under the Department of Electronics and Information Technology. KSUM is designed to provide a comprehensive springboard for budding entrepreneurs, students, and innovators looking to launch high-technology business careers. The primary objective of KSUM is to cultivate a robust and world-class scientific and technological ecosystem within the state. It manages a structured, three-stage incubation framework—encompassing pre-incubation, incubation, and acceleration phases—to systematically guide startups from early idea generation and product development to market readiness and investor matchmaking. To support this lifecycle, KSUM provides extensive infrastructure across Kerala, including flexible co-working spaces known as LEAP Centers, physical incubation facilities, and strategic industry-institute linkages. Notably, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), KSUM established India's first Super Fab Lab in Kochi alongside standard Fab Labs in Trivandrum and Kochi, offering state-of-the-art digital fabrication and prototyping tools. Beyond infrastructure, KSUM serves as a major seed-stage funder and venture catalyst within the ecosystem. The agency offers comprehensive financial mechanisms including innovation grants, seed funding ranging from INR 10 to 15 lakh for product development, patent cost reimbursements, and rent subsidies. It also runs dedicated programs like the Startup Box Programme for student teams and specialized pre-incubation initiatives for women innovators. Furthermore, the agency facilitates direct market access through the "Govt. As A Marketplace" initiative, enabling public procurement of startup-engineered mobile applications and software solutions up to a maximum of INR 20 lakh. As an institutional investor, KSUM maintains an expansive portfolio of over 960 companies across 19 countries, primarily focusing on early-stage investments, seed funding, and prize grants. Its portfolio spans key high-tech sectors including Enterprise Applications, High Tech, Healthcare, and Consumer tech, with notable domestic and international investments in companies such as AgniKul, StackGen, Mykare Health, chargeMOD, BestDoc, and Riafy. To further accelerate growth, KSUM has partnered with corporate entities like Ernst & Young to manage specialized accelerators and has established strategic alliances with technology leaders like Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services to offer subsidised services to registered entities. Led by an executive management team and a structured governing council, KSUM continues to drive Kerala's mandate of earmarking 1% of the state's annual budget for entrepreneurship development, positioning the region as a premier hub for global technology startups.
