Mamaearth (stylised as mamaearth) is a prominent Indian personal care brand headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana. Founded in September 2016 by the husband-wife duo Varun Alagh and Ghazal Alagh, the brand was established out of a personal necessity when the founders, then new parents, struggled to find safe, toxin-free baby products in the Indian market. Today, Mamaearth operates as the flagship brand of Honasa Consumer Limited, a digital-first beauty and personal care (BPC) company that manages a diverse multi-brand portfolio. Honasa Consumer achieved unicorn status in late 2021 and subsequently went public in November 2023, listing on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). Initially launching as a direct-to-consumer (D2C) brand focused exclusively on a small line of baby care products, Mamaearth rapidly expanded its focus due to a growing consumer demand for clean beauty and wellness options. The company diversified into skincare, haircare, body care, and makeup, catering not only to babies but to mothers, fathers, and entire families. It gained significant industry distinction by becoming the first brand in Asia to receive the "MADE SAFE" certification, verifying that its products are formulated using organic, non-toxic, and natural ingredients that are safe for human health and the ecosystem. Mamaearth relies heavily on a lean innovation principle, utilizing continuous consumer feedback and listening to drive its product roadmap. Some of its notable product innovations include India's first bamboo-based baby wipes and 100% natural plant-based toothpaste for children, alongside highly popular adult ranges formulated around traditional natural ingredients like onion, ubtan, tea tree, vitamin C, and charcoal. The brand operates via a robust omnichannel business model. While it began as a digital-first brand selling through its own website and major e-commerce marketplaces like Amazon, Flipkart, and Nykaa, Mamaearth has significantly expanded its brick-and-mortar footprint. Its offline retail distribution networks extend to over 2.7 lakh retail outlets and include more than 100 exclusive brand outlets located across major Indian malls. Financed initially through personal savings, the company later drew substantial backing from major institutional and angel investors, including Sequoia Capital, Stellaris Venture Partners, Fireside Ventures, and Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty Kundra. Led by CEO Varun Alagh and Chief Innovation Officer Ghazal Alagh, Mamaearth continues to be a major disruptive force in India's competitive cosmetics and personal care landscape.
