Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), known as the 'Ship & Submarine Builders to the Nation,' is one of India's premier defense shipyards operating under the Ministry of Defence. Established originally in 1774 as a small dry dock in Mazagon, Mumbai, the company was incorporated as a private limited entity in February 1934. It was nationalized by the Government of India in 1960 and has since evolved into a critical public sector undertaking (PSU) dedicated to strengthening national maritime capabilities. In June 2024, MDL achieved 'Navratna' status from the Department of Public Enterprises, reflecting its strategic performance and importance to the domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem. The core operations of MDL are broadly divided into two major business segments: Shipbuilding, and Submarine and Heavy Engineering. In its shipbuilding vertical, the company specializes in the construction, repair, and refit of advanced naval surface combatants, including destroyers, stealth frigates, corvettes, missile boats, and offshore patrol vessels for the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. In its submarine vertical, MDL manages two independent assembly and launch lines, allowing for the construction, repair, and integration of diesel-electric submarines. It stands out uniquely as the only Indian shipyard to produce both destroyers and conventional submarines for the nation's naval forces. Beyond its core defense portfolio, the shipyard services commercial marine clients by fabricating merchant vessels such as cargo ships, supply vessels, tankers, tugs, and dredgers, alongside offshore structures like wellhead platforms and jack-up rigs for the oil and gas sector. Financially, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders is publicly listed on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) under the ticker MAZDOCK. The President of India maintains the ultimate controlling interest with a prominent promoter holding of approximately 81.22%. For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, the company reported an annual operating revenue of INR 12,553.11 crore, showing a significant 18.9% growth from the previous year, alongside a net profit of INR 2,277.34 crore. The company maintains an essentially debt-free balance sheet with high returns on equity. Headquartered on Dockyard Road in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the company is managed under the executive leadership of Chairman and Managing Director Jagmohan. MDL employs a skilled workforce of over 6,000 personnel and actively collaborates with micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and research institutions to push for local indigenization, achieving around 75% indigenous content in its modern warships. Looking outward, MDL is expanding its global footprint, having approved a strategic international investment of up to $52.96 million to acquire a controlling stake in Sri Lanka's Colombo Dockyard PLC.
