McDonald's Global Business Services (GBS) is a specialized division of McDonald's Corporation, the world's leading global foodservice retailer. While McDonald's was originally founded in 1940 by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald and later transformed into a global franchise powerhouse by Ray Kroc after 1955, the modern era has required the corporation to evolve structurally. GBS was established as a strategic business unit to break down segment and market silos, drive horizontal ways of working, and digitize operations across the massive global system, which spans over 44,000 locations in more than 100 countries. Led by Skye Anderson, GBS integrates several critical corporate functions, including finance, people (human resources), marketing, development, supply chain, and technology. The primary mandate of the division is to identify operational best practices in specific regional markets and scale them globally to unlock efficiencies and capabilities. By implementing digital tools and making data and insights more accessible throughout the system, GBS supports the company's overarching "Accelerating the Arches" growth strategy. This strategy focuses on maximizing marketing, committing to core menu items like chicken and beef, and doubling down on digital, delivery, and drive-thru capabilities. While GBS operates at the global corporate layer to standardize processes and lower costs, the broader McDonald's model relies heavily on a franchise-driven framework. Approximately 95 percent of all McDonald's restaurants worldwide are owned and operated by independent local franchisees. This structure is built on a "three-legged stool" philosophy representing franchisees, suppliers, and the corporation, ensuring mutual investment in long-term success. The business relies on a hybrid supply chain that combines regional suppliers for highly standardized ingredients with local suppliers for perishables, allowing the brand to balance global consistency with local relevance. In India and other international markets, this balance is illustrated by extensive menu adaptation to respect local cultures and consumer preferences, such as introducing the McAloo Tikki burger to cater to a market where beef is traditionally not consumed. Through the centralized optimization driven by units like GBS, McDonald's manages to serve tens of millions of customers daily while maintaining rigorous quality control, high efficiency, and stable operational performance across its corporate hubs and franchised restaurant networks globally.
