Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI) was established in 1973 as a Government of India Enterprise under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence. Headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana, the company operates as a specialized Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) dedicated to achieving self-reliance in the production of critical and strategic materials for India's high-technology sectors, including aerospace, defence, atomic energy, space, and power generation. The core operations of MIDHANI center around the manufacturing of superalloys (nickel, cobalt, and iron-based), titanium and titanium alloys, special purpose steels, soft magnetic alloys, and strategic metals. These unique combinations of metals possess superior mechanical properties and high workability necessary for applications operating under extreme conditions. The company's primary manufacturing facility is located at Kanchanbagh in Hyderabad, which was commissioned in 1982 and commenced commercial production during 1983-1984. To support its extensive metallurgical operations, the Hyderabad plant is equipped with advanced melting furnaces, including Electric Arc Furnaces, Vacuum Induction Melting, Vacuum Arc Re-Melting, and Electron Beam Melting systems. Subsequent shaping and processing are handled via large-scale forging presses (such as 6000T and 1500T presses), a Wide Plate Mill capable of rolling 3-meter-wide plates, ring rolling mills, and drawing facilities. In recent years, MIDHANI has diversified its production footprint by setting up an Armor facility across 10 acres in Rohtak, Haryana, to cater to ballistic products like body armor, vehicle armoring, and bulletproof jackets. Additionally, it formed a 50:50 joint venture with National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) called Utkarsha Aluminium Dhatu Nigam Limited (UADNL) to build a high-end aluminum alloy production plant in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. Historically, MIDHANI's products function as critical import substitutes, supporting high-profile national programs such as the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme, the Aditya-L1 solar mission, and the Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission. Beyond aerospace, the company manufactures specialized biomedical products, including custom titanium implants like hinge knee joints, acetabular cups, and lumbar puncture needles. It is also a key domestic manufacturer of non-synthetic welding electrodes used in the construction of surface ships and nuclear submarines. Financially, MIDHANI is a publicly listed entity trading on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) under the ticker MIDHANI. The Government of India retains a majority stake of approximately 74% following its initial public offering in 2018. The company operates as a Schedule-B, Mini-Ratna Category-I Central Public Sector Enterprise, employing around 770 to 780 regular personnel, while continuously driving indigenous research, development, and technological indigenization aligned with national defence priorities.
