Moj is a prominent Indian short-form video-sharing social networking service owned and operated by Bangalore-based Mohalla Tech Private Limited, which is also the parent organization of the popular social media platform ShareChat. Officially launched on June 29, 2020, Moj was introduced into the market within days of the Government of India's ban on TikTok and several other Chinese mobile applications. It quickly capitalized on the massive sudden vacuum for short-form entertainment, positioning itself as a leading domestic alternative. Within its first six months of availability, the app amassed over 100 million downloads on the Google Play Store, eventually scaling to support a massive monthly active user base exceeding 160 million individuals. The social platform is primarily designed for mobile-first content creators and consumer audiences, allowing users to capture, edit, and share videos ranging from 15 seconds to one minute in length. To enhance the user-generated content creation experience, Moj offers a comprehensive suite of creative utilities, including advanced special effects, augmented reality (AR) filters, emoticons, stickers, and robust editing tools. It also features deep integration with an expansive, licensed music library encompassing both Indian and international tracks, allowing creators to produce lip-sync, dance, acting, and musical content seamlessly. The application distributes content across an array of digital genres, such as comedy, travel, singing, beauty, and educational tutorials, and is available for download on both Android and iOS devices. A core operational strength of Moj is its extensive local focus, offering comprehensive multilingual support across 15 to 16 regional Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Bhojpuri, Gujarati, and Punjabi. This strategy has allowed the platform to build strong penetration and user traction within Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities in India. The platform's strategic growth is further supported by major corporate milestones; in October 2021, Moj partnered with e-commerce giant Flipkart to launch integrated video and live commerce capabilities, enabling real-time shopping. In February 2022, Mohalla Tech executed a major consolidation by merging Moj with MX TakaTak, another leading domestic short-video application owned by Times Internet. This merger created an expansive short-video digital ecosystem in India with a combined community of over 300 million monthly active users. Headquartered at North Tower, Vaishnavi Tech Park in Bengaluru, Karnataka, Moj operates under the broader corporate leadership of Mohalla Tech’s co-founders, including CEO Ankush Sachdeva, Bhanu Pratap Singh, and Farid Ahsan. The parent entity has successfully secured substantial institutional investment capital from top-tier global venture firms, including Tiger Global Management and Snapchat, to fund its ongoing technological scaling, creator monetization frameworks, and competitive positioning against global alternatives like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
