NHPC Limited, formerly known as the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, is a premier Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. Established on November 7, 1975, as a private limited company, it transitioned into a public limited entity in April 1986. Headquartered in Faridabad, Haryana, NHPC has evolved from a dedicated hydroelectric entity into a multi-asset renewable energy producer that plays a vital role in India's energy security and green transition. The core business of NHPC revolves around the generation and sale of bulk power to various state utilities, private distribution companies (discoms), and power utilities. While hydropower remains its dominant sector, the company has diversified into conventional and non-conventional energy sources, including solar and wind power. This capacity includes a robust standalone hydro footprint of 6,251.20 MW, 1,520 MW managed through joint ventures like the Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation (NHDC), a 50 MW wind power installation in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, and expanding solar infrastructures such as the 160.71 MW project in Bikaner and an 88 MW floating solar plant at Omkareshwar. Beyond electricity generation, NHPC leverages its engineering capabilities to provide project management, turnkey construction contracts, and consultancy services. These offerings span geotechnical investigations, design engineering, modernization, and rural electrification projects across India and neighboring countries like Nepal and Bhutan. The company is actively executing massive infrastructure projects, such as the 2,880 MW Dibang multipurpose project and the 800 MW Parbati-II project, to meet future peaking and base-load requirements. Financially, NHPC is a Schedule 'A' enterprise publicly traded on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). For the fiscal year 2024-25, the company posted a total consolidated income of INR 11,729.31 crore and a profit after tax (PAT) of INR 3,411.73 crore. The Government of India maintains a majority promoter stake of approximately 70.95% in the utility. Operationally, NHPC manages 28 power stations spanning 15 states and 2 union territories, employing over 4,500 personnel. The company operates under an executive leadership structure currently led by Chairman and Managing Director Bhupendra Gupta, alongside key executives including Rajendra Prasad Goyal (CFO) and Sanjay Kumar Singh (Director of Projects). Committed to sustainable growth, NHPC integrates Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks into its project lifecycles and manages targeted Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs across remote regions in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.
