Pixxel is a pioneering space technology company and spacecraft manufacturer established in February 2019 by Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal while studying at BITS Pilani. Operating within the aerospace and defense sector, Pixxel specializes in building a constellation of cutting-edge, high-resolution hyperspectral Earth imaging satellites designed to capture geospatial data across every location on the planet. The company’s core mission is to construct a comprehensive "health monitor" for Earth, tracking critical environmental, economic, and security developments before they escalate into global crises. The company operates via a strategic global footprint with dual headquarters in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, and El Segundo, California, USA. The Bengaluru facility is central to Pixxel's core operations, housing specialized mission control rooms, research and development laboratories, clean rooms, and satellite manufacturing facilities. This geographic presence allows Pixxel to capitalize on prime regional engineering talent and integrate seamlessly into both the Indian and North American aerospace ecosystems. Pixxel has raised approximately $95 million to $96 million in total funding through multiple venture rounds, attracting high-profile institutional backers like Google, Accenture, Omnivore, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Glade Brook Capital Partners, and M&G Investments. This funding positions Pixxel as one of the highest-funded space-tech startups in India. Led by Co-Founder and CEO Awais Ahmed alongside Co-Founder and CTO Kshitij Khandelwal, the enterprise manages a rapidly growing workforce of nearly 267 to 360 employees globally. Technologically, Pixxel differentiates itself through advanced hyperspectral sensors that analyze imagery across hundreds of continuous bands along the electromagnetic spectrum, capturing fine details invisible to conventional multispectral satellites. Pixxel’s first technological demonstration satellites, Shakuntala (TD-2) and Anand (TD-1), successfully launched in 2022 on SpaceX and ISRO rockets to validate the core technology. Building on these milestones, Pixxel deployed its first official commercial phase constellation in 2025, consisting of six high-resolution hyperspectral small satellites known as the Fireflies. Pixxel’s business model operates around its flagship no-code Earth observation studio, Aurora. Through Aurora, users subscribe to a library of analytical tools, models, and tailored datasets. The platform processes high-fidelity imagery to provide actionable, real-time insights for a customer base exceeding 50 enterprise and government entities. The company's data and intelligence layers find vital applications across diverse global industries, including managing crop health in agriculture, tracking oil and gas pipeline leaks in the energy sector, supporting responsible resource exploration in mining, assisting urban planning, and advancing global climate initiatives such as monitoring carbon sinks, pollution levels, and natural hazards.
