Postman is the world's leading Application Programming Interface (API) collaboration platform, utilized by over 40 million registered developers and 500,000 organizations globally to design, build, test, document, monitor, and discover APIs. The company operates as a centralized, cloud-based repository that unifies the entire API lifecycle, simplifying workflows, automating functional or regression testing, and fostering seamless collaboration across engineering and product teams. By offering deep integrations with major cloud providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, Postman embeds directly into modern CI/CD stacks and microservices architectures. The origins of Postman date back to 2012 in Bangalore, India, where software engineer Abhinav Asthana created a free Chrome Web Store browser extension to alleviate the everyday friction of API testing. As the tool organically amassed over 500,000 users without formal marketing, Asthana teamed up with former colleagues Ankit Sobti and Abhijit Kane to officially incorporate Postman, Inc. in September 2014. The three co-founders continue to lead the organization today, with Asthana serving as Chief Executive Officer and Sobti as Chief Technical Officer. Originally native to India under Postdot Technologies Private Limited, the company strategically relocated its corporate headquarters to San Francisco, California, in 2017 to better integrate into the global tech ecosystem, while maintaining substantial operations and large engineering offices in Bangalore and Tokyo. Financially, Postman is a privately held, venture-backed company that has achieved massive scale through several high-profile institutional funding rounds. The company raised an initial $1 million seed round from Nexus Venture Partners in 2015, followed by successive Series B and Series C rounds that drove its valuation to $2 billion by 2020. In August 2021, Postman closed a $225 million Series D investment round led by Insight Partners, with participation from notable investors including Coatue, Battery Ventures, BOND, CRV, and Nexus Venture Partners. This latest funding brought Postman’s total capital raised to approximately $434 million, cementing its unicorn status at a valuation of $5.6 billion. In recent years, Postman has aggressively expanded its capabilities via strategic acquisitions and product innovations to support the modern, AI-driven development era. It acquired the API observability platform Akita in 2023 and the automated software development kit (SDK) generation platform liblab in late 2025. In March 2026, Postman launched a completely rebuilt, Git-native, AI-first architecture tailored for the agentic era. This upgrade features an integrated AI intelligence layer, Git-connected workspaces, and the AI Agent Builder, which empowers developers to build, secure, and govern AI-powered API solutions while establishing the Postman Public API Network as the largest public API hub on the internet.
