Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) is a Schedule 'A', 'Maharatna' Central Public Sector Undertaking under the ownership of the Ministry of Power, Government of India. Headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana, the company stands as India's largest electric power transmission utility and operates as a critical backbone of the nation's energy infrastructure. Established originally in October 1989 as the National Power Transmission Corporation Limited, the company was charged with planning, executing, owning, operating, and maintaining high-voltage transmission systems across the country. It underwent a name change to its current form in October 1992 and commenced commercial operations in January 1993, subsequently taking over transmission assets from other central generating agencies like NTPC, NHPC, and NEEPCO. The core operations of POWERGRID are divided across three major business segments: power transmission services, telecom services, and consultancy services. In its primary vertical, power transmission, the company moves large blocks of bulk electricity from central generating agencies and surplus areas to load centers within and across regions. The company owns and operates a massive network of extra-high voltage alternating current (EHVAC) and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems, consisting of approximately 180,195 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and 282 substations with an aggregate transformation capacity of 551,961 MVA. POWERGRID controls around 90% of India's interstate and inter-regional electric power transmission system and wheels about 50% of the total power generated across the country, consistently maintaining an impressive system availability of over 99%. Leveraging its extensive transmission infrastructure, POWERGRID has successfully diversified into the telecom business under the brand name POWERTEL. By stringing Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) fibers along its countrywide transmission lines, it operates a robust broadband telecom network spanning over 74,109 kilometers. It functions as a neutral carrier providing overhead optic fiber network services, lease lines, MPLS-VPN, data, infrastructure, and international long-distance solutions to telecom operators and internet service providers. Furthermore, the company offers in-house consultancy services both domestically and internationally, extending its expertise in planning, engineering, contract management, load dispatch, and project supervision across more than 23 countries. Financially, POWERGRID is a publicly traded entity listed on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) under the ticker POWERGRID. The Government of India maintains a majority stake of 51.34% in the company. In line with global energy shifts, POWERGRID focuses significantly on sustainability and the green energy transition, dedicating a major portion of its capital expenditure to developing "green corridors" that integrate massive renewable energy capacities into the national grid. The company continues to expand its footprint through tariff-based competitive bidding, securing new inter-state transmission system projects across multiple Indian states.
