redBus (registered as Redbus India Private Limited) is a prominent Indian multinational online travel agency specializing in bus and train ticket bookings. Founded in August 2006 by Phanindra Sama, Sudhakar Pasupunuri, and Charan Padmaraju—three engineers from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS)—the company was born out of the personal difficulty one of its founders faced when trying to book a bus ticket during Diwali. Headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, redBus revolutionized the highly fragmented Indian inter-city bus transport industry by introducing a digital ecosystem that aggregates bus inventory in real time. The company operates a comprehensive hub-and-spoke marketplace connecting over 3,500 bus operators with millions of travelers across more than 100,000 routes globally. Beyond its core market in India, redBus has expanded its international footprint to include Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Peru, and Colombia. To support its operational network, the company developed foundational B2B software solutions, including BOSS (Bus Operator Software System), a cloud-based inventory management tool for bus operators, and SeatSeller, a Global Distribution System (GDS) that distributes bus inventory to traditional travel agents and aggregators. Additionally, the brand operates redRail, an authorized partner of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), to provide train ticket booking services. Throughout its operational history, redBus secured institutional capital over multiple venture financing rounds, raising roughly $10 million to $12 million from early-stage investors including Seedfund, Inventus Capital Partners, and Helion Venture Partners. This capitalization fueled substantial technological development and market expansion, allowing redBus to command a dominant 70% share of the online bus ticketing market in India. In June 2013, the Ibibo Group—a joint venture backed by the South African multinational Naspers—acquired redBus for a reported valuation of approximately $135 million to $140 million. Following a subsequent corporate merger in 2017, the platform became part of MakeMyTrip Limited (NASDAQ: MMYT), India's largest online travel company, which currently serves as its ultimate parent organization. Today, redBus handles millions of transactions via its website and dedicated iOS and Android mobile applications. Led by Chief Executive Officer Prakash Sangam and Chief Technology Officer Anoop Menon, the company has scaled to register more than 180 million trips for a customer base exceeding 20 million users. It generates revenue primarily through transactional commissions on ticket distribution and software-as-a-service (SaaS) licensing fees collected from transport operators, remaining a benchmark success story within India's e-commerce and consumer internet landscape.
