Smallcase is an innovative fintech company based in Bengaluru, Karnataka, that has redefined the retail investment landscape in India through its unique ecosystem. Founded in July 2015 by three IIT Kharagpur alumni—Vasanth Kamath, Anugrah Shrivastava, and Rohan Gupta—the company operates as a digital platform that enables users to invest in curated, thematic portfolios of stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These model portfolios, known as "smallcases," are built around specific strategies, sectors, or market trends, allowing everyday retail investors to build diversified portfolios with ease, transparency, and low costs compared to traditional mutual funds. The core of Smallcase's business model relies on a unique business-to-business-to-consumer (B2B2C) infrastructure. Rather than operating as an independent, closed-loop brokerage, Smallcase acts as a technology layer that integrates with India's leading stockbrokers, including Zerodha, Upstox, Groww, ICICI Direct, HDFC Securities, and Kotak Securities. This transactional integration allows users to invest in smallcases using their existing Demat and trading accounts without transferring funds to a separate entity. The actual underlying shares are credited directly to the investor's own brokerage account, ensuring complete ownership, liquidity, and transparency with no hidden lock-in periods. Beyond its consumer-facing platform, Smallcase provides backend infrastructure and digital tools for India's capital markets ecosystem. Its product suite includes Smallcase Publisher, a platform that allows SEBI-registered investment advisors, research analysts, and portfolio managers to create, manage, and monetize their own proprietary stock portfolios. Additionally, through Smallcase Gateway, the company provides widgets and APIs that allow any digital platform, website, or mobile application to offer stock and ETF investing capabilities to their users, creating an extensive in-app investment network. Financially, Smallcase has secured significant institutional backing to fuel its growth and technological expansion. The company has raised over $100 million in funding from prominent global and domestic venture capital firms. Key investors include Sequoia Capital India (now Peak XV Partners), Blume Ventures, Falcon Edge Capital, Beenext, and Unilever Ventures. Notably, the company also attracted strategic capital from Amazon’s Smbhav Venture Fund, marking Amazon’s first equity investment in an Indian fintech startup. Smallcase continues to expand its offerings by introducing institutional smallcases, integrating asset management products, and expanding its network of independent research creators, aiming to make portfolio investing the default standard for long-term wealth creation in India.
