SML Mahindra Limited, formerly known as SML Isuzu Limited, is a prominent and well-established player in the Indian commercial vehicle industry, specializing primarily in the manufacturing and distribution of light and medium commercial vehicles. Headquartered in Chandigarh, with its registered office and integrated manufacturing facility located in Village Asron, Punjab, the company has built a reliable reputation over more than four decades. Originally incorporated in July 1983 as Swaraj Vehicles Limited, the company underwent multiple strategic transformations, including its evolution into Swaraj Mazda Limited, and later into SML Isuzu Limited in 2011, before undergoing its most recent major rebranding to SML Mahindra Limited in October 2025 following a landmark ownership transition. The company's operational history is deeply rooted in strong international partnerships. It was initially promoted by Punjab Tractors Limited in technical collaboration with Mazda Motor Corporation and Sumitomo Corporation of Japan. Following the expiration of the Mazda agreement, it established a technical alliance with Isuzu Motors of Japan. For many years, Sumitomo Corporation and Isuzu Motors maintained primary ownership stakes of approximately 44% and 15% respectively. However, a significant corporate shift occurred in mid-2025 when Mahindra & Mahindra Limited announced and completed the acquisition of a majority stake of approximately 59% in the company for INR 555 crore. Effective August 1, 2025, the company officially became a listed subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra Limited, integrating its operations into one of India’s largest automotive portfolios. SML Mahindra operates a highly integrated manufacturing plant in Punjab that handles the comprehensive assembly of its diverse product portfolio. The company specializes in manufacturing light and medium commercial trucks, buses, school buses, ambulances, police personnel carriers, water tankers, and various other customized application vehicles. Its product lines, which include recognized series like the Samrat XT, Sartaj, and Hiroi, cater extensively to sectors such as transportation, education, healthcare, and government agencies. SML Mahindra is particularly dominant in the domestic school and staff bus categories. While the business model is predominantly driven by the Indian domestic market across 28 states, supported by 10 regional offices, it also maintains an export presence in countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Zambia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Ghana. Financially, SML Mahindra Limited is publicly traded on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The company has demonstrated robust financial health and consistent profit growth. For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, it reported a consolidated revenue from operations of INR 2,398.99 crore, up from INR 2,195.93 crore in the previous fiscal year. Its profit after tax (PAT) rose to INR 121.67 crore, reflecting an efficient operational framework and strong market demand. Currently led by Executive Chairman Vinod Kumar Sahay and CEO & Executive Director Venkataraman Srinivasan, SML Mahindra continues to focus on product technology, quality engineering, and customer-centric commercial solutions to maintain its competitive edge in the evolving automotive landscape.
