Spencer's Retail Limited, a prominent part of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG), is an Indian multi-format omnichannel retailer headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal. Established originally in 1863 during the British colonial era by entrepreneurs Charles Durrant and John William Spencer in Madras (now Chennai), the company stands as one of India's earliest organized retail ventures. Over its long history, Spencer's pioneered major milestones in the Indian consumer landscape, introducing the country's first grocery chain in 1920, the first supermarket chain in 1980, and launching India's very first hypermarket format in Hyderabad in the year 2000. It transitioned to Indian ownership in the 1960s and officially became part of the RPSG Group in 1989. The company operates under a "Food First" philosophy, anchoring its product assortment around fresh produce, groceries, and staples, while diversifying into personal care, apparel, home essentials, electricals, and electronics. To appeal to modern urban consumers, Spencer's incorporates specialized in-store sections like Spencer's Gourmet, Patisserie, and Wine and Liquor. It utilizes a multi-format strategy that spans convenience stores, supermarkets, and hypermarkets tailored to different urban and semi-urban shopping patterns. As of late 2025, the company operates a robust network of approximately 121 stores encompassing over 8.91 lakh square feet of total trading area, with a strong geographic concentration in higher-potential regions across eastern India, Uttar Pradesh, and southern territories. In July 2019, Spencer's strategically expanded its footprint into western Indian markets by acquiring Nature's Basket Limited from Godrej Industries. Operating as a wholly owned subsidiary, Nature's Basket functions as a premium gourmet retailer with over 30 stores in key cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Delhi, and Kolkata, and has introduced luxury grocery formats such as the "Artisan Pantry." To drive higher profit margins, Spencer's maintains a diversified private label program featuring corporate brands like 'Spencer's Smart Choice' for FMCG products, 'Tasty Wonders' for snacks, 'Clean Home' for home improvement utilities, and 'Maroon' for kitchenware and travel accessories. Embracing modern digital commerce, Spencer's operates as an omnichannel player, integrating its physical stores with digital delivery applications. This includes its "Jiffy" quick-commerce platform, which facilitates 30-to-60-minute grocery deliveries. Financially, Spencer's Retail Limited is a publicly traded entity listed on both the National Stock Exchange (NSE: SPENCERS) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE: 542337). For the fiscal year 2024-25, the company reported a consolidated revenue from operations of ₹1,995 crore and an EBITDA of ₹60 crore. Under the leadership of Chairman Shashwat Goenka and CEO Anuj Singh, the organization serves over one million unique consumers monthly, focusing on its core brand proposition: "Makes Fine Living Affordable.
