SpiceJet Limited is a prominent Indian low-cost carrier (LCC) that plays a critical role in India's domestic aviation sector. Headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana, the airline is driven by a vision to make flying affordable and approachable for Indians, connecting many of the remotest corners of the country. It is particularly notable for operating the maximum number of flights under the government's UDAN regional connectivity scheme, making it a key player in expanding regional accessibility. The origins of SpiceJet trace back to March 1984 when the company was originally established by Indian industrialist Satish Kumar Modi to provide private air taxi services, later operating passenger and cargo services under the name ModiLuft until ceasing operations in 1996. In 2004, the company was acquired by Indian entrepreneur Ajay Singh, who repurposed the airline into a low-cost carrier model and renamed it SpiceJet. The airline officially commenced its commercial operations on May 24, 2005, with an inaugural flight running between Delhi and Mumbai. Over the years, the company's ownership has transitioned across major stakeholders; notable media baron Kalanithi Maran acquired a controlling stake through the Sun Group in June 2010 before selling it back to Ajay Singh in January 2015. Ajay Singh continues to guide the company as its Chairman and Managing Director. SpiceJet operates through two primary business segments: Air Transport Services, which handles scheduled passenger air travel, and Freighter and Logistics Services, branded as SpiceXpress, which caters to dedicated cargo transportation. The airline operates major hubs at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. SpiceJet initially launched its international services in October 2010 and has since expanded its network to link domestic hubs with international destinations across the Middle East and Asia, such as Dubai, Sharjah, and Bangkok. The airline operates a diverse fleet consisting of narrow-body Boeing 737 aircraft, including the Boeing 737 MAX, alongside Bombardier Dash 8 (Q400) turboprops that are ideally suited for regional and short-haul routes. Publicly traded on both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) under the ticker SPICEJET, the airline continues to scale its operations. Following a series of capacity expansions and fleet rebuilding efforts, including the induction of multiple wet and damp leased aircraft, SpiceJet has steadily targeted operational growth. The carrier aims to significantly boost its capacity to over 300 daily flights and 220 crore Available Seat Kilometres (ASKMs) by the winter of 2026 to recapture domestic market share and service rising passenger demand.
