Traveloka is a prominent Southeast Asian technology company that operates as an all-in-one travel and lifestyle platform. Founded in February 2012 by Ferry Unardi, Derianto Kusuma, and Albert Zhang, the company is headquartered in Singapore and maintains a significant operational hub in Jakarta, Indonesia. Traveloka was born from Unardi’s personal frustration with the complexities of booking flights in Southeast Asia, leading him to envision a streamlined online system tailored for the regional market. Originally launched as a travel metasearch engine for price comparison, the company transitioned into a full online travel agency (OTA) in 2013, allowing users to book tickets directly on its platform. Over the last decade, Traveloka has evolved into a "super app," expanding its portfolio to include over 20 products and services. Its core offerings span transportation, including flights, buses, trains, car rentals, and airport transfers, and accommodation, featuring over 2.2 million options ranging from luxury hotels and resorts to apartments and homestays. Beyond logistics, the platform offers "Traveloka Xperience," which provides access to more than 90,000 local activities, such as theme parks, tours, and wellness services. The company has also ventured into financial services through its subsidiary PT Caturnusa Sejahtera Finance, offering products like "PayLater" (buy-now-pay-later), travel insurance, and co-branded credit cards with major banks. Traveloka achieved unicorn status in 2017 after securing substantial investment and reached a valuation of approximately $3 billion by early 2022. It has raised over $1.22 billion in funding from prestigious investors, including GIC (Singapore's sovereign wealth fund), the Qatar Investment Authority, Expedia Group, and East Ventures. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw the company lay off staff and process $100 million in refunds, Traveloka pivoted by introducing flexible booking options and health-related services, returning to profitability by late 2020. Geographically, the company has expanded across Southeast Asia and beyond, with operations in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, and Australia. In June 2024, it established an office in Tokyo to tap into the Japanese market. With approximately 140 million app downloads and 40 million monthly active users, Traveloka is a market leader in the region. The company is led by CEO Ferry Unardi and emphasizes innovation through research centers, including one in Bangalore, India. Under its "Traveloka First, Then Your Lifestyle" slogan, the company continues to integrate technology to simplify travel and lifestyle aspirations for millions of global consumers.
