VMware LLC is an American cloud computing and virtualization technology company headquartered in Palo Alto, California. Founded in 1998 by Diane Greene, Mendel Rosenblum, Scott Devine, Edward Wang, and Edouard Bugnion, the company became a pioneer in virtualizing the x86 architecture. Its first commercial product, VMware Workstation 1.0, launched in 1999, allowing users to run multiple operating systems as virtual machines on a single PC. This innovation fundamentally changed IT infrastructure by enabling organizations to optimize physical hardware, improve efficiency, and reduce costs. The company's core operations center on providing multi-cloud services for all applications, enabling digital transformation with enterprise control. Its portfolio spans several critical segments: private cloud platforms like VMware Cloud Foundation and VMware vSphere Foundation, networking solutions such as VMware NSX, and security offerings including VMware Carbon Black. VMware’s solutions are designed to consolidate siloed infrastructure, unifying compute, storage, networking, management, and security into integrated stacks that deliver ready cloud infrastructure for both private and public clouds. This allows businesses to run mission-critical workloads across diverse environments, including major providers like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. Throughout its history, VMware has undergone significant ownership changes. In 2004, it was acquired by EMC Corporation for $625 million. In 2016, Dell Technologies acquired EMC, bringing VMware under its umbrella. VMware later became a standalone entity again after spinning off from Dell in November 2021. The most recent major transition occurred on November 22, 2023, when Broadcom Inc. completed a $69 billion acquisition of the company. Following this acquisition, Broadcom rebranded the entity as VMware by Broadcom and reorganized it into four primary divisions: VMware Cloud Foundation, Tanzu, Software-Defined Edge, and Application Networking and Security. As part of this restructuring, the End-User Computing division, which included popular products like Horizon and Workspace ONE, was sold to the investment firm KKR and rebranded as Omnissa. Financially, before its acquisition by Broadcom, VMware was a publicly traded titan on the NYSE. For the fiscal year 2023, it reported revenue of approximately $13.35 billion. The company serves a global market, with about half of its revenue generated in the United States through a vast network of distributors, resellers, and strategic partnerships. With over 38,000 employees globally at its peak, VMware has consistently been recognized for innovation and as a top employer. Today, as a subsidiary of Broadcom, the company continues to focus on its "Cooling-as-a-Service" model and modernizing data centers, supporting India’s and the world’s transition toward scalable, low-carbon, and highly efficient digital energy and IT solutions.
